It can be hard to tell the difference just looking at your walls. Unless you’ve lived in your home long enough that you were the last one that painted it, you’re very likely dealing with someone else’s paint project. As tempting as it can be to just buy some paint and add another coat, a mismatch in paint type can lead to bubbling and peeling.
Most painters these days use latex paint, so unless you have an older home that hasn’t been painted in some time, you probably don’t have oil based paints. Part of the reason for oil paint falling out of favor is that many oil paints contain lead. Despite those type of paints having impressive longevity and resistance to fading, the health risks prevented them from being viable long term.
Note that if you’re looking to add a coat of oil based paint to a wall currently covered in latex paint, you can sand the surface down lightly and use a coat of primer to ensure the new layer of paint adheres properly. (The process for which is outlined here.)
